Esgian Shipping RoRo and MPP Market Reports for November 2024

We’ve just released our Esgian Shipping RoRo and MPP November Market Reports and are excited to present the key highlights from the executive summary.

(RoRo Market Report)

China-to-US trade route (2023-2024):

• A very tight race between WalWil and Glovis, showing strong performance and consistency.
• K-Line shows growth potential, while NYK and MOL have minimal involvement.

Chinese operators’ commercial footprint Q3 2024:

• COSCO’s 10 vessels made 48 port calls (+14.3%) across 19 ports (+19%), averaging 4.8 calls per vessel (-31.4%), a figure notably lower than that of other deep-sea operators.
• This reflects an efficient network with a strong cargo base driven by Chinese EV OEMs

Port Trends in November:

• Deep-sea port calls at Bremerhaven dropped 17% YoY to 49. WalWil (-14.9%), Glovis (-25.4%), and Sallaum (-7.7%) saw reductions, while NYK (+6.1%) and MOL (+9.1%) reported increases.
• In contrast, Baltimore saw steady performance with 60 calls, up from 57 in 2023.

Regional Update:

• West Africa port calls rose 23.2% YTD 2024, with a 21.1% surge from October to November, driven by Grimaldi, WalWil, and MOL.

(MPP Market Report)

Europe to West Africa (deep-sea extended) trade route (2023-2024):

• UAL Chartering, holding a 13% of traffic at 2.3 sailings per month, is closely followed by MACS Maritime with 11% and 2 sailings per month.
• As the leading breakbulk carrier to Africa, UAL now faces growing challenges from rising competitors.

Short-sea operations (Wilson vs. Wagenborg):

• In Q3 2024, Wilson’s 135 vessels surged to 2,609 port calls, a 6.4% increase, though they visited fewer unique ports.
• Meanwhile, Wagenborg’s 99 vessels saw a 4.3% drop in calls but expanded their reach to more unique ports.

Port waiting time development in November:

• Abidjan port’s waiting time for deep-sea vessels jumped to 70 days, up from 6.8 days the previous year.
• EuroAfrica, a key operator, experienced delays exceeding 15 days, among the longest in November.
