Who needs Rig Values?

Whether you work for a bank, financial institution, investment fund, insurance company, consultancy, or drilling rig owner, asset values are a key aspect of the offshore rig market.  Knowing how much financial exposure you have to the market at any time is critical to risk management and financial success.

How are values calculated?

Rig Values uses a transparent methodology to determine rig values.  Using a combination of algorithm-based automation along with experienced human input, values are always up to date and representative of the current price a drilling rig would transact at in an as is, where is, willing-buyer, willing-seller, charter-free deal.

Values are calculated based on macro trends, rig market trends, comparable reference transactions, and technical specification benchmarking.  Rigs which may have certain non-disclosed issues, including condition details and special equipment or lack of certain equipment, may have actual values that deviate from our published values.

How often are values updated?

Values are continuously monitored.  In many cases, values change daily based on the stacking or contract status of a rig.  In addition, values are normally updated at least once per week based on market conditions, transactions, and events.

What do the values represent?

Values generated by Esgian’s Rig Values provide our best representation of the value of a rig based on an as is, where is; cash deal; charter free; willing buyer, willing seller basis.  Published values may deviate from actual transaction prices when a transaction occurs due to other market factors, non-public information about a rig or fleet of rigs, and particulars of the situation (e.g., distressed). Rig Values takes no responsibility for financial loss in a transaction or financing arrangement.

Note that fleet values include undelivered rigs under construction at shipyards.

While published values normally match the values we would provide in a certified valuation, published values are not meant to be used as a valuation certificate.  If you need a certified value and valuation certificate, Rig Values can provide this.  See question on certificates for more info.

What types of rigs does Rig Values provide values for?

Currently Rig Values provides values for standard mobile offshore drilling units (MODUs): jackups, semisumbersibles, and drillships.

Values for drill barges, tender assist drilling barges, tender assist semisumbersibles, liftboats, offshore accommodation rigs, and other specialized offshore rigs (workover/well intervention) are not available at this time, but may be phased in over time.  Rig Values does offer certified values for these types of rigs upon request.

What if I need a rig valuation certificate?

Rig Values provides valuation certificates for all drilling rigs listed on the Rig Values site plus other offshore rigs including accommodation rigs, workover/well intervention rigs, tender assist drilling rigs, and liftboats.

For clients who need certified valuations regularly, the cost of this can either be included in the subscription price.  Ad hoc certified values would come as an additional cost.

Why do rig values change?

Changes in the value of a rig are normally caused by the following events:

1) Changes in market conditions – these usually have a wider scope and affect entire fleets, types, or designs.  When market-based events lead to valuation changes, Rig Values posts news and commentary about this on the news section of the dashboard. You can find these by searching for “value change”.

2) Rig transactions – rig sales and M&A activity may lead to valuation changes.  For latest transaction data, go to “Latest rig sales” on the dashboard.

3) Changes in contract and stacking status – when a rig goes on or off contract or changes its stacking status from warm/hot stacked to cold stacked, the rig’s value will change depending on the length of time the rig is stacked and the timing of the rig’s future contracts, if any. Contract data is available in Rig Analytics.
