Launched only in October this year, the Esgian Shipping Suite for RoRo is getting traction in the market with two global automotive OEMs, three shipping lines and two freight forwarders signed up to the platform. We are very excited about 2023 - when we're also launching the MPV/general cargo segment, so stay tuned!
As we are currently tracking over 750 RoRo/PCTC vessels up to 30 times per hour across some 400 ports globally, you do get a lot of interesting insight.
In our December release, we are pleased to offer our clients the ability to analyse vessel movements between not only port to port, but also region to region or country to country. With the assistance of our partner Hesnes Group, we’re also able to capture actual CEU (car equivalent unit) capacity now and in the below graph we take a deep dive into East Asia to Europe and see Q1-Q3 2021 and compare that with the same period this year.
A few interesting observations:
- Total CEU capacity has increased 4.3% meaning over 100 000 more car carrying capacity totalling 2.4 million CEU in the first 9 months of 2022. Perhaps not that much per se, but then again the PCTC market remains very tight and you cannot simply drum up more capacity by snapping your finger.
- Apart from March and June, all months in 2022 see an increase in transport capacity vs 2021
- Comparing the largest export markets, we see that Korea remains steady whereas China likely increase on the expense of Japanese exports
- Looking at this year in isolation, Wallenius Wilhelmsen is the largest player in this trading corridor averaging 15 sailings per month with the ability to move close to 1 million cars in the first three quarters of 2022 with Hyundai GLOVIS securing the 2nd spot with a safe margin. However, Höegh Autoliners has the largest vessels with close to 7.500 CEU on average whereas “K” line (Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd) has the most consistent service delivery looking at # of sailings month by month. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. on the other hand is the shipping line with the highest increase in both capacity and number of sailings in 2022 vs 2021.
