Navigating through waves: A comprehensive overview of Far East RoRo dynamics (2021-2024)

We’ve launched an exclusive report on major Far East ports like Nagoya, Yokohama, Shanghai, Pyeongtaek, and others. Discover key insights and trends shaping the Far East RoRo segment over the past four years.

Here’s a sneak peek from the executive summary:

Overall Activity Development (2021-2024): Among the top 12 ports in the Far East based on the number of deep-sea calls in 2024, three South Korean ports (Pyeongtaek, Ulsan, and Masan) showed signs of growth. This also applied to the Port of Shanghai, while three Chinese ports (Tianjin Xingang, Huangpu Pt, and Yantai Pt) exhibited a declining trend over the period.

Carrier Development: In 2024, Wallenius Wilhelmsen recorded the highest number of deep-sea port calls in Shanghai, capturing a 22% market share, and 44% in Pyeongtaek, while Toyofuji was the top operator in Nagoya (37%) and Yokohama (29%) among the top 12 ports in the Far East.

Time at Berth: In 2024, deep-sea RoRo vessels spent an average of 1.4 days at Chinese ports. However, the top four Chinese ports in this analysis all showed an average of 0.6 days, which was 57% faster than the average. In Japan, the average was 0.7 days, with Yokohama and Hiroshima performing below average. In South Korea, the average was 1.1 days, with Pyeongtaek and Ulsan registering 1.4 days, 27% slower than the average.

Port Waiting Time: Beginning in 2024, the launch of new vessels, such as those from BYD, brought some peaks in activity to Chinese ports, particularly at Yantai where BYD’s new vessels recorded waiting times of 196 hours. Despite this, Shanghai’s waiting times remained stable. In Japan, Yokohama achieved shorter waiting times than the national average, while Pyeongtaek experienced fluctuations, and Ulsan consistently maintained low waiting times
