Navigating through waves: A comprehensive overview of Europe's RoRo dynamics (2021-2024)

Overall Activity Development (2021-2024): Zeebrugge exhibited a generally stable increase in deep-sea port calls, while Livorno showed the most dramatic rise among the top 5 ports. In contrast, Bremerhaven and Southampton experienced overall decreases. Antwerp saw fluctuations in its port calls over the four years.

Carrier Development: In 2024, Wallenius Wilhelmsen had the highest number of deep-sea port calls at Zeebrugge (25% market share), Antwerp (42%), Bremerhaven (38%), and Southampton (43%), while Grimaldi was the top operator at Livorno (90%) among the top 5 ports in Europe. However, several newcomers and small- to medium-sized operators are emerging, providing opportunities for proactive port and terminal operators.

Time at Berth: In 2024, deep-sea RoRo vessels spent an average of 1.5 days at European ports. Despite some fluctuations in port times at Antwerp and Bremerhaven, Zeebrugge and Southampton demonstrated consistent stability. Livorno recorded the shortest waiting times consistently.

Port Waiting Time: Bremerhaven had the highest waiting times among the top 5 ports, with waiting times 30% higher than Europe’s average monthly port waiting time in 2024.
