Australia continues push for offshore wind development, opening a third area for project proposals

With an already busy 2024 for offshore wind in Australia, with the Bunbury area in Western Australia proposed and results from the Gippsland expected soon, Australian authorities have opened a third site for bids from project developers. This follows application rounds for the Hunter Coast (up to 5000 MW) and Gippsland areas (up to 10 000MW), hosted last year.

The now opened site, called Southern Ocean, is located around 15 km off the coast of Port Fairy, in the western parts of Vicotria state. Key details you need to know about the site includes:

  • Site suitable for fixed installations
  • Potential for up to 2900 MW
  • Projects proposed in the vicinity from developers Skyborn Renewables/ Australis Energy, Altia Energy and Bluefloat Energy.

The round is open for submissions from March 6 to July 2, 2024, with results expected early 2025.
