Europe marks its second FID this week, as Ørsted and PGE move ahead with Baltica 2

Ørsted and PGE have announced the final investment decision (FID) on the 1.5 GW Baltica 2 project, aiming for a COD in 2027. The project, supported by a 25-year CfD contract, will be the largest offshore wind installation in the Baltic Sea once operational. The Polish market is expected to see a significant uptick in activity in the coming years, with the Baltyk II and III projects potentially just around the corner, and Baltic Power already having started in-sea installation activity.

The project is expected to compromise of 107 Siemens Gamesa 14 MW-222 wind turbines. Turbine installation will be carried out by Cadeler and Fred. Olsen Windcarrier, expected to start in 2026. Foundation installation will be carried out by Van Oord, expected to start 2025/2026, and supplied by Navantia/Windar and Steelwind. The CfD contract for the project, awarded in 2021 will run from COD date, expected in 2027, at the price of EUR 71.82 plus accumulated inflation from 2021.

The decision for Baltica 2 is the second European project to reach FID this week. The developers for the 1080 MW UK project Inch Cape, ESB and SDIC Red Rock Power, took the final go ahead decision on Monday.
