Australia awards preliminary feasibility license for the Southern Ocean area, building on already impressive pipeline.

The Spinifex project developed by JERA Nex and Alinta Energy has been awarded a preliminary feasibility license for the Southern Ocean offshore wind zone in Australia. The proposed project is estimated to have a capacity of up to 1200 MW with 70 turbines and located off the coast of Victoria state in southern Australia.

The Spinifex project was the only bidder for the Southern Ocean area. Several other developers have proposed projects in the area, including the DP Energy Barwon project, and the Australis Energy/Skyborn Cape Winds project. The winning project will now move to the next stage of the feasibility licensing process and consult with the First Nation groups to get the final approval.

The award marks the third offshore wind area in Australia to grant feasibility licenses, following the Gippsland and the Hunter coast rounds, building up an impressive pipeline of projects in the region.
