Positive news out of the South Korean market, as Incheon City pinpoints offshore wind development sites:

Incheon City announced today that three offshore wind areas had been selected as target sites, through the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s 2024 Public-Led Large-Scale Offshore Wind Farm Development Support Project, taking a first step towards developing offshore wind projects in the area.

The three target sites ( IC1, IC2, IC3) have a combined capacity of 2 GW, and are located some 90 km from Incheon City, of the north-west coast of South Korea. For the areas IC1 and IC3, Incheon City plans on selecting operators through a public round, while for IC2, the city plans to form a consortium with Korea Midland Power.

In contrast to most offshore wind projects currently proposed in South Korea, the three sites in Incheon have been identified through a public- led process, and not though a developer application, with preemptive verification from local stakeholders as part of the feasibility study.

Several developers are also pursuing offshore wind project in the area, including Ørsted, who attainted an EBL for two project sites in the vicinity of the three Incheon sites late last year, for a combined 1.6 GW.
